Pixie Get The Grumps

Well today was "long" run day.

It started off by my getting out of bed late! Then I had some cereal and did a trip to the tip (recycling) and the nursery (Gnome likes to look at the fish and we were interested in apple trees!).

So when we got home I was starting to feel hungry but I was also aware of the time, the cold weather and the roast dinner I had to cook! So I downed some lucozade and a sports bar and got ready for my run.

Yesterday and this morning I had had some mild period like pains. It wasn't TOTM so I ignored them so when I changed for my run to discover some unexpected bleeding I was shocked. I almost cancelled my run but BM is looming and I need the runs. This, needless to say, played on my mind and ruined my run!

Off I went anyway. I cut of one corner (which I had earlier mentally added to increase the distance) as I wanted to do this run properly and was aware that a longer run may kill me off! I plodded on and stopped in mile two and three to take a photo wasting about 2mins in total.

I carried on feeling the lack of running and bad fueling in my legs. I was drained. My earlier findings were playing on my mind. Why? It had never happened before. The route I chose was new too and more undulating than expected so I again chopped off another corner.

I walked through 2 SIS gel stops (I will use them at BM so wanted to use them on a couple of runs before hand to ensure I was fine!) and by 6m I was dead. I carried on and then at 6.4m I gave up and walked in. Total distance 7.1m

Looking at the stats there are several reasons behind my carp run!

  • Fuel carp
  • Bleeding playing on mind
  • Running too fast to start with even with my 10:1 strategy.

Here are the stats and given that each photo stop was about 1min and the gel walks at mile 3 and 6 meant about 2-3mins walking (gel, drink nose blow!) it's hardly surprising I died! I was going far to err fast! Still at least it is done. Better luck next week when I will try 1mile run 1 min walk. Then chose for BM!!

My current plan is based on Trinity's (I think) strategy for ultras

decide on overall pace, run a mile and if you have spare time walk it then run to the next mile marker and repeat

I would like to do under 3 hours - 13:45ish pace - as my last two halves were over 3 hours, but hilly

actually I think on the flat I might aim for 13:35 pace - giving a time of 2:58

last year I did BM in 2:43ish - but that would be 12:26ish pace, which I have not done for a long time

Pixie, you're being a bit hard on yourself. For a start you've not had great training recently and a number of things have hampered you getting into a regular straight run of running without any problems. So today's run looks pretty solid for me and to be honest if you HADN'T taken the stops and breaks for photo's etc, I think I would have shouted at you never mind Spans!

Well done girlie. You did good and you'll do fine at BM. 7 miles is more than adequate as a long run and you know it.

There are some truely wonderful people out there

just recieved this by mail from a fellow blogger. I want to share it so everyone can benefit as I have. I've wiped my tears away and I've printed this up so when I am getting sulky and down I will read this and remember .... Aim High! (how appropriate is that name!) Don't EVER think that you any any less of a runner than anyone else Kim, You show a dedication and determination that puts many people to shame. You have a goal for your marathon time which is truly amazing - and I am inspired by it..We all have our dream peaks (sorry about the mountain reference again - I'm a mountaineer too!) - and they are a reflection of who we are and what we are able to acheive - for ourselves - and anyone who can't see the value of that endeavour is blind indeed. When you run your next pb - to me that is as phenomenal an achievement as any world record..and I will bounce up and down like a mad thing at the thought of it - and I get pretty animated when I'm excited about somethi...

Remember this?

Yes I'm back on the bench :-( That sore foot thing on Wednesday... well it's still here. In typical bruised fashion it hurts more after a period of sitting down/sleep and I've been popping the brufen. There is a slight swelling too. Don't think it is laces ... on closer inspection the pain is (looks at google ... gives up and picks up "how to run injury free" instead) on the sesamoids area of the err middle phalanger (??? impressed hey!) In the same location where you would get morton's neuroma but the description is wrong so I don't think it's that!! (oh the perils of a little knowledge from a book or the web hey!) Anyways this means I'm on the bench. No running. I have 4 or 5 weeks until the Suicide Sixish so no panic, I will take 1 whole week off regardless and see what happens next weekend. Also think I will get some new shoes with more cushioning. Now all I need to do is locate my bike and/or exercise bike from the depths of the garage un...

Munchtime Run

Woke up feeling "coldy" ... tender throat, tired and headache. Decided the headache was due to lack of drink the night before as I was talking to Duck for 90mins! So had some paracetomol and drink and packed my kit! My reasoning being that even if it was a cold it was not "on my chest" so no harm in running and anyway the fresh air would do my head good! Spent most of the morning feeling pants too. Headache has still there despite drink and drugs but I had my kit so off I went.1.2m in and the batteries on my GPS died! This meant it was me and the smog filled roads and my watch. As I alter my route slightly every run (so I don't compare splits!) I didn't really know the distance or pace. I did know that when I got to the Ford garage that the office was just over 1m away and I had about 13mins left when I got there. Problem was that it wasn't much further before my legs said "you are having a laugh!" and I started to flag. As I knew I was having ...
