The day had arrived - today was the Fetch One Mile!
I was a nervous wreck it felt like a proper race not just me and my watch.
I spent all morning doing no work because I was either getting a drink or going to the loo! Total pre-race paranoid stress pixie!
I have never done a 1mile race and my best known mile was 10:14 so that was a aim a sub 10 min mile.
Having had a stress fracture in Feb meaning 2mths off, then FLM, then time off for colds and family and 3wks off due to a back problem just over a month ago I was totally stressed over this! I wasn't convinced I could do it. How long is a mile anyway? I've always just run and let the GPS tell me the distance!
Anyway lunchtime arrived and I changed. Off I went for a warm up, walk jog stretch panic repeated twice!
I had planned to start by the canal bridge and knew that I then had 2 bridges to go under then carry on to just past a corner to get to the mile. As it was I just wanted to get it done so I started early and then just ran with only a faint idea as to where the mile marker was.
Then I was off, my head was saying don't go off to fast whilst also repeating sub 10 you want sub 10!
The canal was blissfully clear ... ducks and swans all on the water as if they knew! I almost joined them as I passed under 1 bridge (mud to slippery wet concrete to mud whilst running as fast as you can is not a good combination!).
GPS was set to pace, HR and distance so I had no idea of time! My HR was storming in the 190s!
Rob's words of "whatever your body says just hang on in there!" repeated themselves in my head.
As I came to 0.8m and rounded a corner I could see a fisherman!!
HELP!!
What if the mile didn't finish before him? Would he ruin my sub 10?? Panic set in and HR hit 198. So close could I do it? No! I had to go round him whilst jumping over his box of stuff as he was taking up the whole path!
As I landed my watch bleeped! I HAD DONE IT!!
Time showed 9:49!
I was in shock!
Dropped to a stagger and as my legs turned to jelly I wiped my face from sweat and tears (literally!) I was so pleased!
Thank you coach Spans!
The next mile took about 26mins as I was totally shattered! My HR was everywhere, my legs were useless and I was grinning whilst literally wiping the sweat that dripped from my head! 15mins later I was still dripping!
So total run from start to finish was about 3m and time was about 40 mins as per the plan!
Fetch mile was 9mins 49secs with an average HR of 190 (90%!)
Very happy pixie with tired legs!
